Don’t Look for Khmer Films at the Oscars?

Sweet Cucumber isn’t a fan of Khmer film.
They're hugely popular, and given their daily titles, I am wondering if Khmers really are blood-craving people (see also their sickening curiosity for street accidents). Although I'm convinced that your average Khmer is a good and warm-hearted person, their taste in movies leaves a lot to be desired. It's either some extremely tacky love story (but those seem to be reserved for television nowadays), or it's about cruel and sadistic ghost & torture stories. Most screenplays are very primitive, and only seem to aim for the lower instincts of mankind: rape, torture, murder, weird rituals, mass killings, horror, alien abductions, sex (the hidden kind), etcetera...
But he gives us a feel for the genre with a series of movie billboards and the sound of promotional soundtracks blaring from the theaters.

Be glad your in Phnom Penh, loudspeakers are shut off at night. In the countryside however, they're left on day and night!
